BRAZIL

Marcia X

unnamed.jpg

Márcia X was a Brazilian performer and visual artist. Her performances, videos and installations tackled themes such as sexuality, eroticism, childhood and religion, often using sex toys, children's toys and religious artifacts.

"Baby Beef" occupied a showcase completely impregnated with red: front and side walls, ceiling, floor and even the internal lights were red, to characterize it as a three-dimensional painting experiment. On this wall, composing a straight line, several red plastic tongues were aligned, alluding to the organ responsible for the freedom of speech and expression.

Anna Maria Maiolino is one of the most significant artists working in Brazil today. She expresses a concern with creative and destructive processes by spanning drawing, printmaking, poetry, film, performance, installation and sculpture.

This work particularly studies human relationships and the difficulty underlying communication and expression, travelling the faint boundary between an attention to human physicality and corporeality and a more intimate, spiritual sphere.
